What is Pipe Flange?

A pipe flange is a device, which connects different pipes, valves, fittings, and other components in a piping system. These flanges act as a support system as there is a vigorous movement of fluids or gases across the system. These protruding ridges securely connect pipelines and prevent any leakage within the systems. The mounting procedures of these components are simple and allow for easy dismantling procedures. They can also be welded in place however, this will not allow them to be inspected or cleaned if the need arises. There are several flange standards, which are used in the piping industry to meet different requirements.

What is Slip On Flange ?

Slip-on flanges are one of the most popular and common flange components used within the piping industry. These flanges are designed with a low profile head or hub, which is attached to the line making use of one or more fillet welds. The size of the bore is larger than the connecting area. They are mainly used in low-pressure systems where the risk of leakage is low. These components are also utilized in applications where the space for installing the fitting is less. The cost of fitting these components is very low making, them highly desirable. Apart from this, they are available in an array of shapes and sizes, which allow them to be fitted in different applications.

Flange International Standards

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a federation of worldwide national standards of flanges. The international standards lay down the basic dimensions, surface finish, material, facing type, and other technical information about flanges. The flange standards in Europe are governed by the European EN 1092 series. According to the series, steel flanges have nominal diameter and pressure between PN 2.5 to PN 400. Another European flange standard is the EN 1759, which only consists of ASME and ANSI flanges. The American flanges are standardized, comprising of ASME flanges and DIN flanges (PN 2.5, 6, 10, 16, 25, and 40). It also specifies the PN and DN designations for ASME flanges (PN 20, 50,110, 150, 250, and 420).

What are Weld Neck Flange and its classes?

A weld neck flange is characterized by its long protruding hub. The hub acts as a strong support system and distributes the weight evenly to the piping components during the vigorous flow of fluids. This is the major reason why they are a preferred choice in high-pressure and elevated temperature systems. These flanges are the strongest flanges in the industry and are widely seen in hostile environments. They are directly welded onto the pipe and help in reducing the turbulence within the system in stress-induced environments. A WNF covers pressure classes of 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500.

Difference between Class 150 and Class 300 Flanges

  • Class 300 flanges possess superior strength and hardness to withstand higher-pressure loads compared to class 150 flanges across different systems.
  • Class 300 flange is constructed with more metal and raw materials compared to the 150 flanges.
  • Class 150 exhibits a face dimension of 27.5 inches, while class 300 has dimensions of the face of 28 inches.
  • Both these classes possess different outside and bolt circle diameters, which doesn’t allow them to be joined directly within the system.
  • The pressure rating in class 150 reduces drastically when the temperature is increased. In the 300 class, the pressure recedes more uniformly.

Flange Face Types and uses

There are six types of flange faces

  • Raised face flange- A RF flange has a protruding hub, which allows it to seal the gaskets by concentrating pressure on the mating flanges to create a strong seal.
  • Flat face flange- FF flanges are used in low-pressure systems as the contact surface has the same height as the bolting line.
  • Ring joint flange- A RTJ flange helps in creating a metal-to-metal seal between different mating flanges. They are used in high-pressure and temperature systems.
  • Lap joint flange- This flange has a flat face which is not used to seal the joint. It is utilized to simply host the back of a stub end.
  • Tongue and groove flanges- Both these flanges fit in each other and effectively seal the flange.
  • Male and female flange- These two flanges are similar to the tongue and groove flanges. Here the male face is ¼ high while the female face is 3/16th deep.

Difference between Forged Flanges and Threaded Flanges?

  • A threaded fitting comprises of threads, which fit perfectly with the corresponding piping component. A forged fitting, on the other hand, is welded directly on the pipe or mounted with the help of bolts.
  • Forged fittings are mostly permanent and difficult to dismantle. Threaded fittings can be easily dismantled. They allow the user to inspect and clean the pipeline.
  • Threaded fittings are preferred in low-pressure and temperature applications. Forged fittings are used in the transportation and movement of fluids at high pressures and elevated temperatures.

How to check flange Pressure rating?

Flange pressure ratings can be classified as the maximum pressure allowed in a flange that can withstand increasing temperatures. As there is, increase in temperature the rating of the flanges decrease. The material used in producing these flanges influences the rating of the flange. The rating can be calculated using two methods.

  • Full rating basis- In this method, the flange is weaker and the pipe is stronger. This means the flange will become the weakest commodity in the system.
  • Line basis method- In this method the pipe wall thickness is decided based on the pressure and allowable stress on the components.
