The 321 Stainless Steel (1.4541) with UNS 32100 is an austenitic stainless steel that gives the ideal corrosion resistance and has very low carbon content. Inox 321 (AISI 321) is majorly used in thermal and welding processes. In the annealed condition 1.4541 Stainless Steel (SUS321) is nonmagnetic and gets magnetic when welded. In the pulp and paper mills, Stainless Steel 321 (SAE 321) shows good resistance due to the excess acidic surrounding.
1.4541 Stainless Steel Properties
321 Stainless Steel has special properties typical to the product. The following sums up the qualities of 1.4541 Stainless Steel.
- SS 321 has good corrosion resistance.
- In acidic chloride environments, 321 SS has greater corrosion.
- The resistance is high with molybdenum alloy percentage.
- Inox 321 is resistant to sulphuric acid at around 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
- AISI 321 has good formability and weldability.
Stainless Steel 321 Application
SUS321 Stainless Steel is used in flue gas desulfurization systems and is also a regular component in petrochemical industries. The chemical process vessels and pulp and paper industry also use SS 321(1.4541). It is also used in condensers in power generation, boiler casings, firewalls, jet aircraft components, industrial process equipment, oil refinery, etc.
SS317L Resistance and Processing
Stainless Steel 321 (EN 1.4541) acts like type 304 alloy in terms of corrosion resistance.Moreover, SS 321 has more resistance to inter granular corrosion as compared to alloy 304 due to addition of Titanium in it. Long-term exposure to temperature between 900°F – 1500°F may deteriorate its resistance against general corrosion.
Type 321 is slightly more difficult to form as compared to 301, 304 and 305 due to the presence of certain elements in it. However, it can be readily formed and drawn by applying higher pressure.
The presence of Titanium in Stainless Steel 321 (DIN 1.4541) reduces carbide precipitation during welding. Weld filler AWS E/ER 347 or E/ER 321 is recommended with this material. This alloy 321 can be welded by common resistance and fusion techniques.
SS 321 is non-hardenable by heat treatment. For Annealing this material heat it between temperature range 1750-1050°F.
