Stainless Steel 310 / Stainless Steel 310S (1.4845 / 1.4842) with UNS S31000 / UNS S31008 is an austenitic stainless steel developed for use in high-temperature corrosion resistant applications such as furnace parts and heat exchanger components. Moreover, Stainless Steel 310 (AISI 310) is a hard and ductile material with excellent creep properties at elevated temperatures.SUS 310S / SUS 310 (SS 310S / SS 310) is also used in chemically harsh and oxidising environments. Operating temperatures for this alloy is up to 1140ºC. With its high chromium content, 1.4845 Stainless Steel offers good corrosion resistance to increase high-temperature properties. Alloy 310 also finds usage in cryogenic applications with low magnetic permeability and toughness down to -450°F (-268°C). AISI 310 Stainless Steel Properties
Stainless Steel Grade 310 (UNS S31000) has special properties typical to the product. The following sums up the qualities of Stainless Steel 310.
- 310 SS has good corrosion resistance.
- In acidic chloride environments, SS310 has greater corrosion.
- The resistance is high with molybdenum alloy percentage.
- AISI 310 is resistant to sulphuric acid at around 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
- SUS 310 has good formability and weldability.
Stainless Steel 310 Applications
1.4845 Stainless Steel (SS310) is used in flue gas desulfurization systems and is also a regular component in petrochemical industries. The chemical process vessels and pulp and paper industry also use 310 Steel (S31000). It is also used in condensers in power generation.
SS 310 Resistance and Processing
AISI 310 (1.4845) is not designed for service in wet corrosive environments. The high carbon content, which is present to enhance creep properties, has a detrimental effect on aqueous corrosion resistance. The alloy is prone to intergranular corrosion after long term exposure at high temperatures. However, due to its high chromium content i.e 25% (X12CrNi2521), Alloy 310 is more corrosion resistant than most heat resistant alloys. The high chromium (25%) and silicon (0.6%) content of Alloy 310 make it more resistant to high temperature corrosion in most in-service environments. Excellent resistance at normal temperatures and also has good resistance to oxidizing and carburizing atmospheres.
Heat Treatment of Grade 310 Stainless Steel
SUS 310 (UNS S31000) can be solution annealed by heating in the temperature range from 1040 -1065°C. 310 Stainlessmaterial is constantly heated to this temperature range until thoroughly soaked followed by rapid quenching.
Heat uniformly – 950–1200°C
Final anneal after hot forming at- 1000–1150°C
* Rapid quenching is recommended.
1.4845 Stainless Steel behaves like type 316 while cold forming. Long-term exposure to high temperature is not recommended.
SS 310 Stainless Steel can be readily welded by most standard processes including TIG, PLASMA, MIG, SMAW, SAW and FCAW. AS 1554.6 pre-qualifies welding of 310 with Grade 310 rods or electrodes.
Stainless Steel Grade 310 is tougher than other grades of 304 Stainless Steel. Thus, AISI 310 Stainless Steel is advised to use chip breakers so that the hardenability of this alloy is considerably brought down with the help of low speeds and constant feeds.
