History of Monel

Monel Alloy 400 was discovered by David. H. Browne who was the chief metallurgist for International Nickel Co. It was named after the company president Ambrose Monell and it was finally patented in the year 1906. However, one L was not included in the name as usually family names were not permitted in trademarks in those days. Today the name is a trademark of Special Metals Corporation. It is an expensive product and has a cost that varies from five to ten times the actual cost of copper and  nickel . Thus, it is usually used only in those applications where no cheap alternatives can replace it. It is more expensive than piping in money and carbon steel.

Monel 400 Applications

Monel 400 is applied in industries like marine engineering, heat exchangers, chemical and hydrocarbon processings, heat exchangers, valves, and pumps. It is also used in alkylation units in the reacting section. Concentrated hydrofluoric acid is used while using Monel 400. It is also used in chemical processing, heat exchangers, hydrocarbon processing, pumps, and valves.

Special Chemical Composition of Monel 400

Alloy 400 can be used in any kind of environment and needs a lot of resistance to corrosion and heat and always retains its mechanical properties. It has 63% nickel, 28% to 34% Copper, and 2.5 % Iron along with around 2% Manganese. It has a metric-imperial property and a density of 8.8 g/cm3 along with 0.318lb/in3. It has a melting point of 1350°C, 2460°F and has a modulus of rigidity of 65.3 kN/mm2 and a modulus of elasticity of 105 – 120 kN/mm2.

Monel Alloy 400 Properties :

UNS N04400 has special properties and has unique qualities.

  • Monel is a solid solution single-phase binary alloy. It is soluble in various percentage.
  • It has to be worked at a very slow speed and also has low feed rates.
  • It is completely resistant to any kind of acids or corrosions and has alloys that would be able to withstand heat in pure oxygen.
  • It has a specific gravity of 8.80 and a melting range of 1300 – 1350 degrees centigrade.
  • It has an electrical conductivity with 34% IACS.
  • It has super mechanical properties, especially at subzero temperatures.
  • Strength and hardness of Monel 400 increases with little deviation of ductility or impact resistance.
  • The alloy does not become brittle even when it is cooled to the minimal temperature of liquid hydrogen.
