Inconel 600 (UNS N06600) is an alloy with a combination of Nickel and Chromium. It is used for a wide spectrum of applications that requires high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance. This alloy was mainly designed for service temperatures from cryogenic to raised temperatures up to 2000° F. This alloy is  a non-magnetic, high-temperature alloy that has excellent mechanical properties and offers the desirable combination of high strength, hot and cold workability and exceptional resistance to an ordinary form of corrosion. Inconel 600 Corrosion Resistance
Inconel Alloy 600 has high chromium content which raises its oxidation resistance considerably above that of pure nickel, while its high nickel content enables it to retain significant resistance under reducing conditions. This alloy exhibits an exceptional amount of resistance to stress and salt water, exhaust gasses and a number of organic acids and compounds. Controlled chemical composition limits make it immune to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking and also provides the high value of resistance to alkaline solutions.

Heat Treatment of Inconel alloy 600
Inconel alloy 600 hardens by heat treatment.
The following heat treatment can be used for this alloy:

  • Annealing: 800~1150℃; Air or water cooling

** Note: There is a strong tendency for the crystal grains to become coarse after the temperature rises above 1050℃

Workability
Welding Inconel 600
This Alloy 600 can be welded by standard welding processes as used for stainless steels. Although, welding rods are available specially for welding Inconel 600. On welding, Inconel alloy 600 forms an oxide layer which can be removed by grinding

Machining Inconel 600
Nickel 600 is machinable in both the hot worked and annealed conditions. Because considerable heat is generated in machining this alloy, high-speed steel, cast nonferrous or cemented carbide tools should be used. The tools should be kept sharp. Lathe turning speeds with high-speed and nonferrous tools are 35/45 sfm (0.18/0.23 m/s); speeds with cemented carbide tools are 100/175 sfm (0.51/0.89 m/s).

Hot and Cold Forming
The 600 alloy can only be strengthened by cold working. For best performance, En. 2.4816 can be cold worked below 1200°F (649°C). Hot working should be done between 2300°F – 1850°F, while light working can be done at 1600°F.

Maximum temperatures that Inconel alloy may be used in different environments are as follows:

  • Long-term continuous use in air oxidizing environment: 1100℃
  • Reducing environment of H2 or CO not containing sulfur: 1150℃
  • Oxidizing sulfur environment (in air containing sulfurous acid): 815℃
  • Reducing environment containing hydrogen sulfide: 535℃
  • Hydrogen chloride: 540℃
  • Chlorine gas: 510℃
